Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to order john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained functional.
